Topic:
I ran a report and exported it to Excel. Why is the file type CSV instead of XLS?
Solution:
When you run a report (such as Attendee, Transaction, or custom reports) and then export that report to Excel, the default file format is a CSV (Comma Separated Value) file. CSV files are more portable – that is, they can be opened by more operating systems and software packages than XLS files.
The reason the file opens in Excel by default is because when Excel installed it becomes the default program used to open CSV files. That means that, unless you change the file associations on your PC, the downloaded report will automatically open in Excel.
Once you’ve opened the report in Excel, you can easily convert the file to a true Excel (XLS) file – just open the file, click Save As, and change the entry in the Save as Type field to “Microsoft Office Excel Workbook (*.xls)”.
