When I insert a merge field in an email, how do I know the exact information that will display in that email? |

Merge fields (or merge codes) allow you to pull a field from the RegOnline databases and insert that information into an email. You can pull fields from an attendee's record, the event itself, and various other fields of information. For example, if you want to include a salutation in your email so the attendee sees (for example) "Dear Linda," in their email, you can insert the merge field for the attendee's first name in your email. That means that the email content will read:
Dear /*Merge: FirstName*/,
(Note the space after "Dear" and the comma at the end of this line.)
When the email is delivered to the attendee, the salutation reads:
Dear Linda,

The Custom Fields above (Custom Field 1 through Custom Field 10) are used in conjunction with mailing lists, and not with the fields in your event. When you upload a mailing list, you have the option to include information that is specific to your organization or industry by using the custom fields. For example, you may have a mailing list with a field indicating a person's meal preferences (vegetarian, etc.). When you upload the mailing list into your account, you could use field 'CustomField1' for this information. Later, when you send an email to your event attendees you could include the merge field for Custom Field 1 to add the attendees' meal preferences to the email.
A number of merge codes, such as Link to Invoice and Link to Attendee Record, require attendee data, and will only work when the email is sent directly to the records of registered attendees. The merge codes that need attendee data, will only work in Event Emails (Reminders, Confirmation Emails, etc.) or Event Attendees mailing lists in RegMail. |
