    Lightning [li] RegOnline System Performance Issues

    This thread is designed to communicate any RegOnline system performance related issues. When an issue has been identified and resolved, then the details will be posted here.

    Description:

    RegOnline experienced a hardware failure at our main data center that resulted in a one hour service outage. Following this episode there was some residual performance degradation as the services were restored.

    This issue has been addressed and resolved. 

    Future Prevention Steps:

    RegOnline is currently in the process of setting up a second off-site facility for additional server and database redundancy.

    Friday 04/04/07 approx. 9:30am - 10:30am.

    Description:

    RegOnline experienced about an hour of service degradation due to a Denial of Service attack (DoS). This interuption lasted about one hour and caused timeout errors for registrants and users.

    Future Prevention Steps:

    New server switches will be installed in the next few weeks that are better equiped to handle DoS and other similar types of attacks.

    Thursday 04/10/08 11:22am - 11:45am MST.

    Description:

    RegOnline experienced about 20 minutes of downtime this morning caused by a network switch failure at one of our data centers.  The issue was identified and resolved.

    Future Prevention Steps:

    Planned network switch replacements and maintence will be performed soon to prevent similar issues in the future.

    Tuesday 05/13/08 4:35pm - 5:05pm MST.

    Description:

    RegOnline users and registrants experienced intermittent service interuptions for approximately 30 minutes on Tuesday due to complications with a published update to our web site.

    The issue was identified and resovled.

    Tuesday 07/23/08 1:00pm - 1:55pm MST.

    Description:

    RegOnline experienced an intermittent service degradation for approximately one hour today due to a circuit failure in our primary data center.  This caused some service interruptions for RegOnline users and registrants. The issue was identified and our services were moved to a fail over switch to resolve the issue.

    Description:

    RegOnline experienced an air conditioning unit failure at our primary data center causing service interuptions for RegOnline users and registrants. The issue was identified and systems were powered down until proper cooling could be restored.

    Improvements to the main power conduit to the redundant air conditioning units are being made to reduce future risk exposure.

    Description:

    RegOnline's credit card processor experienced technical difficulties for approximately 6 hours Wednesday morning. During this period, no credit card transactions were successfully processed for events using the RegOnline Merchant Gateway. RegOnline's credit card processor has identified and resolved the issue.

    Thursday 09/11/08 8:40 PM - 9:55 PM MST

    Description:

    RegOnline experience a switch failure at our main data center related to a previous issue on 09/06/08. This failure caused service interruptions for users and registrants for approximately 1 hour. The switch was replaced and service was restored at approximately 9:55 PM MST.

    Additional fault tolerance is being installed to prevent future interruptions of this type.

    Description:

    RegOnline experience a minor hardware failure on 09/30/08. This failure caused intermitent service interruptions for users and registrants for approximately 20 minutes. The issue was resolved and service was restored at approximately 9:40 PM MST.

    Description:

    RegOnline experienced a minor failure during a hardware upgrade resulting in 39 minutes of service outage. The issue was resolved and service was restored at 9:40pm MST.

    Future Prevention Steps:

    Hardware upgrades will continue to improve the speed and reliability of RegOnline.

    Description:

    RegOnline experienced 150 minutes of downtime begining at 11:00pm MST on November 1st 2008. The outage was caused by an unexpected complcation during a scheduled hardware upgrade. At 2:00am MST the problem was resolved, and the new hardware was installed.

    Future Prevention Steps:

    Hardware upgrades will continue to improve the speed and reliability of RegOnline.
